[Q&A] What’s the procedure for correcting an error on a 4473?

Only the buyer/customer can make changes to Sections A & C.

If you find an error on Section A or C (either incomplete or incorrect information) and the firearm has NOT yet been transferred, ask the customer to make the necessary corrections by placing a single line through the correct information (if any), entering the incorrect information, and then initialing and dating their change.

If you find an error on Section A or C (either incomplete or incorrect information) and the firearm has already been transferred, contact the buyer immediately, asking them to come back and correct it.  With the buyer, photocopy the page(s) that needs to be corrected before the changes are made.  Then, have the buyer make the necessary changes for both errors and/or omissions in Section A and/or C on the photocopy only and mark the date next to each change made.

If you make an error or omit something in Section B and/or D, then you must correct it.  If the firearm has already been transferred, you’ll need to photocopy the page(s) and make the changes on the photocopy, including your initials and the date marked by each change. However, if you catch the issue before the firearm has been transferred, you may correct it by placing a single line through the incorrect information (if any), entering the correct information, and then initialing and dating your change.

Any corrected photocopies should be attached to the original ATF F 4473 and retained as part of your permanent records.
